Excursion

• Date & Time : July 12 (Wed.), Afternoon

• Place : Manjanggul Lava Tube

We will introduce fantastic tourist attractions in Jeju to our participants.

- Manjanggul Lava Tube The total length of Manjanggul Lava Tube is about 7.4km. It is a lava tube that is partially multilayered. The main tunnel’s width is 18m and its height is 23m. It is one of the largest lava tubes in the world. There are many lava tubes in the world, but Manjanggul Lava Tube has a significant meaning in that it was formed thousands of years ago, and it is very well preserved. Therefore, it is very valuable to researchers and scientists. Due to the sinking of the ceiling, there are 3 entrances. The one that tourists can use is the second entrance and they are only allowed to go as far as 1km into it. There are various cave formations in Lava Tunnel in Manjanggul Lava Tube, such as stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, lava tubes, lava shelves, and lava rafts. In particular, the lava column that is located at the end of the tourist area is about 7.6m high and is known as the highest lava column in the world.

Social Networking Event

After the excursion, around 6:00 – 7:30 pm, we would like to invite all the participants to attend a speed networking event hosted by the Optica Technical group on Short Wavelength Sources and Attosecond/High Field Physics on the lawn outside the conference venue. At the event everyone is encouraged to talk with people they do not know previously, and swap conversation partners every ~5 minutes.
* Drinks and snacks will be provided during the event.

Informal Tour Program

The official program of the conference will finish at noon on Friday, 14 July. We will arrange an informal tour program Friday afternoon. We will visit Jeju Jungmin Saekdal beach for a 3 hour surfing course. It will cost around 50 USD. If you are interested, please join by sending an email to kyungtaec@gist.ac.kr (first come first served basis).
